QNI Stations Use Telemetrics Equipment to Stay Competitive
In the competitive broadcast industry, it is important that stations stay current with their technology and equipment. Knowing this, WGEM in Quincy, IL contracted Alpha Video to install a new studio facility, hoping to improve digital automation for consistent camera shots with a user-friendly system.
Alpha worked with the station to provide a variety of cameras, designed to robotically control the stations’ equipment from its current control room. The robotic cameras would allow a single operator to control all of the equipment, and included a second control position in the studio so the staff could manage the technology during a single-person broadcast, during a news break or special report. WGEM was so impressed with the new installation, that it contacted Alpha again to design and establish a video server and state-of-the-art automation for their master control facility. This involved transitioning the studio from an analog-based system to digital technology, as well as moving to a tape-less playback system.
“The changes have been dramatic and we have seen a substantial increase in productivity with the opportunity to re-deploy our resources in other areas,” said Brady Dreasler, Director of Facilities for QNI Broadcast Group. “The reliability of the equipment has been fantastic and has increased the efficiency of the station considerably!”
Now, WGEM has state-of-the-art technology that allows the station operator to run two stations from one location, as well as schedule programming and commercial spots from playback off of the server, with minimal intervention. It also enjoys improved digital automation with a user-friendly format.
The latest installation was completed in the summer of 2004.
